Paul Mata
Hailing originally from the Los Angeles area, Paul grew up in a musical family. His Father was a guitarist and band leader, and his mother was a violinist. His brother is a blues guitarist and harmonica player and his sister a classical/ragtime pianist. The entire family played piano for recreation. Paul began playing the guitar at age 11, and has formally studied drums, and classical guitar. He played professionally throughout high school. During that time he and his band backed up several notable acts including The Coasters, Eddie Floyd (Knock on Wood), and Sonny and Cher. He did his first recording session at age 15 as a vocalist, later doing more studio work with his band. One of the band's accomplishments came during a battle of the bands held at the Los Angeles Sports Arena in which they placed 2nd while competing against 150 of Southern California's very best groups.

After completing his tour of duty in the Navy, Paul attended Pasadena City College and California State University, Los Angeles. In addition, Paul studied in college and privately with jazz notables Gary Foster, Bobby Bradford, Dave Koonse, Putter Smith and others. During the mid 70's, Paul was a staff writer for MCA music, publishing division, and gained much of his composition experience during that time.

Paul has been in the CDA area for about 20 years, and was the lead guitarist and one of the founding members of the blues group "Charlie Butts and the Filter Tips". He wrote the title track on Filter Tips cd "Told You Once" as well as four other tunes from the same release. He also sang lead vocals on several of the songs. Currently, he teaches full-time, and does live performances at various community events.

His years teaching have provided Paul with a rewarding career that he feels offers new challenges and learning opportunities on a daily basis.
